National Public Radio journalist Emily Feng entitled her latest book, Let Only Red Flowers Bloom: Identity and Belonging in Xi Jinping’s China. It’s a metaphor for the current Chinese government’s quest for homogenity and a single idealogy.
The Book Club will discuss this book on November 9 at 7:30 p.m. online.
Feng reported in China from 2015 – 2022 and covered all types of stories about culture, protests and national identity. Her book begins with the optimistic visions of China’s future under President Xi Jinping and then how different ethnic groups became suppressed if their religion and language were not those of the Han majority and the Communist Party. It also includes chapters on the recent changes in Hong Kong.
