A book tracing a Korean family through several generations is the July Book Club choice, Mater 2-10, by Hwang Sok-yong). It’s a novel that tracks several generations and explores working class Koreans seeking fairness during the time of Japanese colonial rule.
The book was written for a Korean audience familiar with the geography and Korean naming systems. Jennifer Roberts Crittenden and those who have started reading the book give these suggestions :
*Read the Afterword first
*Look online for a summary of the book. You can find one example here.
*Make notes about the generations of family names.
*Use ChatGPT or another AI service and get a map of the Korean penninsula including railroads, rivers and cities.
The Book Club meets online via Zoom and will discuss this Monday night, July 13 at 7:30 . If you’d like the link and aren’t on the book club list, contact Barb Bova, babova@aol.com
