Book Club Selection Has a Local Tie

WTB’s Book Club will be discussing Moloka’i by Alan Brennert on Monday, November 11, 7-9 p.m.. Rachel is a seven-year-old Hawaiian girl who finds a mark on her skin and is sent away from her home and family to Kalaupapa, a leprosy settlement on the island of Moloka’i.

One of the themes of the book is embracing life in the face of death. The publisher says the book is one of warmth, humor and compassion and one reviewer wrote, “few readers will remain unchanged by Rachel’s story.”

The book has a local tie in that Mother Marianne Cope and other Sisters of St. Francis journeyed from Syracuse in the 1880s to Hawai`i to care for people with leprosy. If you are interested in learning more about Cope’s work see this website from the National Park Service.

The Book Club meets on Zoom so call Jennifer Roberts Crittenden at 315-633-2817 to get the Zoom link.
