Refugees are eager to learn sewing skills and WTB has been teaching them for years, in a project spearheaded by Jennifer Roberts Crittendon. Jennifer and others run free classes with 1-on-1 teaching. The refugees, usually women, attend for 8 or 9 weeks and make a small pillow, a pot holder, an apron, a shoulder bag, elastic waist pants, and simple blouse. At the end of the class they are given a sewing machine so they can continue their sewing skills.
If you know of someone who has a usable machine, Jennifer is always looking for them. Or if you have a stash of fabric or notions, the instructors can use them. Contact Jennifer at 315-345-9217.
Or is there someone on your holiday gift list who is hard to buy for? How about a donation to this refugee sewing project in honor of that person. Note on your check this is for the Sewing Program and send it to WTB, PO Box 6847, Syracuse, NY 13217.
Here is one woman proudly showing the bag she learned to make.
