Dinner Dialogues Set for Sept. 27

InterFaith Works is hosting its 9th annual Dinner Dialogues on Thursday, Sept. 27. This is an opportunity to build relationships and learn from other people’s faith. Dialogue is to love, what the blood is to the body. When the flow of blood stops, the body dies. When dialogue stops, love dies and resentment and hate are born. The dinners occur in homes throughout the community; consider hosting one, facilitating one, or attending one. For registration and information contact Daryl Files at dfiles@interfaithworkscny.org or Gracious Moyo at gmoyo@interfaithworkscny.org.

Book Club to Discuss ‘American Nations’

The July 23 book club meeting will discuss American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Cultures of North America, by Colin Woodard. Future meeting dates and books to be discussed are as follows:

  • Aug. 27 – We Need New Names by NoViolet Bulawayo
  • Sept. 24 – My Promised Land by Ari Shavit (about Israel)
  • Oct. 22 – Salt Houses by Hala Alyan (about Palestine)

For information about meeting location, contact Jennifer Roberts Crittenden, 315-633-2817.

Sycamore Hill Gardens Tour

Once again, Sycamore Hill Gardens opened its grounds for our annual fundraiser on May 20. The nearly 40 acres of privately-owned land west of Marcellus include diverse statuary, koi ponds, stonework, a formal garden, a hedge maze and more.

Recent plantings of 10,000 trees and shrubs have turned the land surrounding the garden into one of New York State’s largest privately held bird sanctuaries. We welcomed spring (after a very long winter) at these beautiful private gardens opened especially for us!

Dialogues Continue Around Town

“The Power of One” was the theme of a gathering of teen girls and women of all ages and many faiths and cultures Apr. 21 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Liverpool. We made flannel blankets to donate, shared stories, and enjoyed great food as we cultivated new friendships and helped our community (read a report here). Previous dialogues in our 2017-18 program year included:

  • Jan. 7 at CNY Rise about notable women in various faith traditions and lessons we can learn from their lives and experiences (read a report here)
  • Dec. 10 at the Matilda Joslyn Gage Museum in Fayetteville: dialogues with local Girl Ambassadors for Human Rights on themes portrayed by displays in various rooms of the museum (read a report here)
  • Oct. 11 at CNY Rise: sharing thoughts and stories with women from different faiths and cultures (read a report here)
  • Sept. 14, at various homes: Interfaith Dinner Dialogues bringing together diverse people for friendly, facilitated conversation about faith and spirituality over a meal.
